My 3 grandfathers

I had the honor and pleasure of drawing my 3 grandfathers...
I made the two pencil drawings at the request of my mother. They hung in her living room for many years. Due to circumstances I never drew my grandmothers. I'm sorry about that now...
The ink drawing was made for my godfather's obituary.

On the left is my grandfather on mother's side. He died very young. In the middle my grandmother's 2nd husband. On the right is my grandfather on my father's side.

So, Henri Gobbin was my mother's natural father. He died very young of pneumonia.
My mother was only 6 years old at the time. She was the eldest of 5 children, 2 of whom also died that year.
It was a terrible year for her mother!

The drawing is already quite yellowed by being exposed to daylight for many years.

My grandmother remarried a few years later to this man: André Driessens. A widower with a daughter from his first marriage.
He became my godfather when I was born. At his death I made this drawing for his obituary.

And so this is my father's father. He was a modest, taciturn man, always in a sad gray suit, who usually read his newspaper quietly.
But at family gatherings, he would stand on a chair and play tunes on his harmonica. That's how I remember him...

This drawing also turned yellow over the years... the test of time!

The pencil drawings, now with us for a while, to scan in to post here. The cat on the left is a wood carving my father made.
On the right my caricatures of the late Prime Minister Dehaene and US Secretary Madeleine Albright, who recently passed away.
